This week Louisiana will join other states in celebrating National Nursing Home Week and will honor nursing facility residents and staff for their contributions to their community. Governor John Bel Edwards recently signed a proclamation designating May 8-14, 2016, as Nursing Home Week in Louisiana.

The Governor’s proclamation commends nursing facilities for helping their residents live life to the fullest. The proclamation also encourages citizens to visit a nursing facility in their community. The theme for National Nursing Home Week is “It’s a Small World with a Big Heart.”

“Our member facilities invite you to visit a nursing facility in your community during this special week,” Louisiana Nursing Home Association Executive Director Joe Donchess said. “When you visit, you’ll see how our skilled employees deliver high-quality care to our residents.”

With Baby Boomers aging, many are caring for their elderly parents and finding themselves unprepared. Often, family caregiving quickly becomes overwhelming for the caregiver, especially when cognitive decline is a factor. The time may come when conditions necessitate transitioning a spouse, parent, or other relative to the safety of a nursing facility for 24-hour care. It is best to start planning early, especially regarding financial aspects. Now is a good time to tour and see that nursing facilities are, indeed, small worlds operating at the pace of older adults.
